CARING FOR YOUR PEARLS
Pearls are relatively soft compared to gemstones and precious metals, so it is important to take special care of your pearls to ensure they will remain bright and beautiful.
Cosmetics, perfume and hair spray all contain chemicals that can dull the luster of a pearl over extended periods of time. Even acids contained in body oils and perspiration can work to damage luster in the same way. Therefore, it is best to put your pearls on after applying hairspray, etc. Swimming pools and hot tubs may contain chlorine that can be damaging to pearls, gold metals, bleach, detergents, dish soaps and salt water are also very harsh to pearls.
Always keep your pearls separated from hard jewelry items such as metals and other gemstones to prevent from scratching your pearls. Pearls are best kept in a soft cloth pouch or a separately lined jewelry box. Wiping your pearls occasionally with a soft dry cloth or slightly water-dampened cloth will take off surface oils and residues that would eventually dull the luster.
If you wear your pearls several times a week, it is best to take them in for professional restringing about once a year on average, or whenever there are signs of wear. When the strand has stretched and you notice that the pearls slide easily between the knots, it is then necessary to restring your pearls. Many experts advise silk thread for stringing as it is strong and prevents the strand from stretching more than other threads such as nylon, cotton, or rayon. Individual knotting between each pearl will prevent all the pearls in a strand from falling off, should a break occur. Knotting also prevents the pearls from rubbing against each other.
